Our Veterans: Service and Sacrifice | By Jocklyn Mundy
As a testament to his lifelong commitment to service, Dewayne Thrift, a U.S. Air Force Vietnam War Veteran from Windermere, Florida, will be inducted into the Florida Veterans Hall of Fame this month. This prestigious honor is bestowed upon individuals who have gone above and beyond in their service to both their country and their fellow veterans.
At 20 years old, Dewayne found himself thrust into the heights of the Vietnam War effort. Like so many who served our country, his service in Vietnam was marked by sacrifices, including the heartbreaking loss of his best friend, who was killed in action at only 19 years old. Dewayne emerged from those trying times with a dedication to making a difference. As a 100% disabled veteran, Dewayne continues to carry the weight of his sacrifices to this day.
Dewayne grew up in the Midwest and, after returning to civilian life, found his home in Windermere, where he has lived for 33 years. He has owned numerous businesses in the West Orange area, all the while raising his two daughters. Thrift’s commitment to service did not wane, but this time it was his local community and his fellow veterans who benefited from his dedication. In Windermere and the surrounding areas, Thrift’s name became synonymous with veteran support. He actively engages in ensuring that those who have served their country receive the support and recognition they deserve.
His selflessness and dedication have touched the lives of countless veterans, providing them with the guidance and support necessary to overcome the challenges they face. In 2008, Dewayne, along with other Windermere Veterans, Bill Criswell, and Bill Curts, started an organization called “Home at Last,” a not-for-profit that built homes for in-need veterans. Dewayne is quick to give Criswell and Curts, who have since passed, credit for this amazing undertaking. Their joint endeavor provided nine mortgage-free homes to severely disabled veterans in our area.
Dewayne has served on numerous boards over the years. He is currently serving on the board of the Fisher House Foundation, a program that provides lodging for veteran families when traveling for medical treatments. Dewayne and his wife, Roné, will always support the local community and veterans. He is a lifetime member of the VFW and a service officer of the American Legion in Clermont. He is also a licensed real estate agent and broker.
Dewayne Thrift’s induction into the Florida Veterans Hall of Fame is a well-deserved honor, one that will forever shine a spotlight on his extraordinary contributions to our Country and community.
“I believe that when you volunteer, you have the opportunity to make a true difference in the lives of others and help people in need.”
