New Year, New Me...? Rethinking Your 2024 Resolutions

The combination of time away from work and relief that holiday shopping is complete builds a true anticipation for the new year. As January approaches each year, we think about our aspirations and goals:

I’m going to finally get back into the gym...
I’m finally going to be able to start saving more...
We can finally get the house fixed up to sell...

But how are those goals looking in February? There is a strong chance school, work, and family demands have gotten in the way again, like they did last year. We think this year will be different, but somehow we are the same person as we were in December.

Let’s rethink your resolutions in critical areas of your life so 2024 will be a satisfying year of progress and training in the people we want to be.

Stop Obsessing Over Goals

Wait, what do you mean? If you don’t set a goal, how will you know where to go? Zig Ziglar, famous author and motivational speaker, once said:

“If you aim at nothing, you will hit it every time.”

Was he wrong? No, he was exactly right. We need goals to know where we are going. Our problem is that we obsess over the alluring appearance of goals and a changed life but have no idea how to actually get there.

Imagine presenting a new business plan to your boss. You belabor a grandiose vision for the upcoming year, containing elaborate goals for your company. Impressed by your presentation, he or she responds positively and asks about how the company will get there. “How? Well, I am not quite sure.”

Sound familiar? We are captivated by the idea of goals with no idea how to achieve them. We must rethink how we think about goal-setting.

This is exactly the point of recent books like Atomic Habits by James Clear or The Power to Change by Craig Groeschel. In essence, our “obsession” must be in the daily habits and rhythms that will actually enable us to reach our goals for 2024 and beyond.

Becoming the Person You Desire

There is a sub-genre of movies that no one seems to be talking about, and yet we love them. What is the common thread in movies like Mission Impossible, Indiana Jones, John Wick, Rocky, Rambo, The Shawshank Redemption, and Interstellar?

All of these movies contain “highly-skilled veterans coming out of retirement,” though that is less catchy than “action movie!”

We love these heroes because we meet them in the middle of their stories, where they brush off skills honed by years of training. But we don’t think about their training. We wouldn’t watch movies observing Andy Dufresne finish accounting homework or John Wick training at a gun range.

In the same way, the people of change who achieve great goals starts with the small decisions you make today. Visible goals sit on years of unseen training.
