Some anniversaries are particularly challenging, the tenth anniversary of Windermere's Officer Robert (Robbie) German's heroic sacrifice is one such occasion. As we honor this solemn milestone, we reflect on the profound influence Officer German had on our community.

Answering a call that appeared routine, he was tragically taken from us on March 22, 2014, leaving a lasting impact on the community he so dearly loved. His untimely death serves as a stark reminder of the everyday hazards faced by those in law enforcement, a sobering reality underscored by Windermere Police Chief Dave Ogden, “Many people fail to realize the significant commitment and risks that police officers and military personnel accept daily.”

Officer German's career in Windermere was characterized by his professional commitment to his duties and his deep connections with the community. Born in Burlington, Ontario, and raised in Florida, he pursued his passion for law enforcement. Initially, he worked in airport operations and then was drawn by the appeal of serving a tight-knit community and joined the Windermere Police Department.

His legacy encompassed his dedication to his profession and his genuine love and affection for the people he served. Officer German once shared in a Windermere newsletter, “I feel fortunate to be working for the Windermere Police Department...it has allowed me to get to know many town residents on a more personal level.”

The town’s response to his passing was a powerful testament to the difference he made during his five years of service. Chief Ogden recalls: “I will never forget receiving that dreaded phone call, ten years ago at 0359 hours. While time doesn’t heal wounds, it does allow us to reflect on what values we hold true. Officer German’s death shook the innocence of this little town. Although our force had faced some challenges, I don’t think anyone truly believed something like this could happen here.”

This tragedy invoked immediate action from the leaders of Windermere. In the fall of 2014, through the efforts of the Windermere Town Manager Robert Smith, Windermere Mayor Jim O’Brien, and Police Chief Dave Ogden, The Windermere Police Department (WPD) Foundation was established in honor of Officer German. This not-for-profit has made tremendous philanthropic efforts for our community, throughout the year the Windermere Police Department Foundation hosts or participates in several charity events. Chief Ogden says, “We strive at every opportunity to reach new heights to Honor Robbie’s memory.”

Since Officer German's passing, Chief and Shelly Ogden, the Windermere Police Department, and many from the community have embraced Robbie's parents, Tim and Debbie German. The Germans are active participants in honoring their son's legacy and are an integral part of the commemorative events and initiatives.

Officer German's memory has been honored in numerous ways, his name is enshrined on local, state, and national memorials including the Robbie German Memorial Highway, the Robert German Windermere Post Office, and a memorial plaque at the Municipal Complex. He is also commemorated through various Memorial rides and events.

To this day, as a symbol of the community's enduring respect and gratitude, there is a citizen who continues to take care of a makeshift memorial outside of Walgreens where Officer German was fatally wounded. This is a faint reflection of the unwavering service and sacrifice Officer German made and it reminds us daily of the extraordinary difference one individual can make.

Robbie's influence and dedication to Windermere and Central Florida did not cease a decade ago. His essence has persisted, resonating throughout Windermere with a lasting legacy characterized by honor, integrity, and a selfless commitment to community service. We remain deeply grateful for the sacrifices made by Robbie and all those who serve and protect, recognizing the profound impact their dedication has on our safety and well-being.

There will be a candlelight vigil at the Officer German Memorial at the Windermere Police Station on Friday, March 22nd at 7:30 pm. The WPD Foundation, in collaboration with Windermere Brewery, continues to honor Officer German's legacy, as a special beer will be released this month to commemorate his life and service. Proceeds will support the WPD Foundation. For more information: wpdfoundation.com
