On October 5th, Windermere’s Parks and Recreation Committee will proudly host the 22nd annual Windermere Run Among the Lakes (RATL). More than just a 5K and 10K race, this beloved event celebrates community spirit, born from a local response to the 9/11 tragedy. Over the years, it has become a cornerstone event supporting the town’s parks and recreation programs. Welcoming participants of all ages and abilities, the Run Among the Lakes beautifully combines art, nature, and fitness in a way that captures the unique charm of Windermere.

A Race Born from Tragedy

The roots of the Windermere Run Among the Lakes begin in 2001, when Windermere resident Donna Steele and a handful of community members sought to do something in response to the September 11 attacks. Despite being over 1,000 miles away from the epicenter of that tragedy, Windermere felt a deep connection and desire to contribute. Donna says, “I joined Parks and Recreation, and each committee was challenged to come up with a fundraiser. When 911 happened, I thought we needed to unite people; we wanted it to be something fun for the family.” Steele, passionate about both art and sports, decided to blend the two in an event that would bring the community together and provide a way to give back. The Windermere Run Among the Lakes was born.

Art and Nature, Side by Side

Initially, the race incorporated local art, with artists contributing pieces each year that reflected themes of nature, community, or local landmarks. While the early years saw more traditional works, the race now embraces digital art, with recent years featuring photography and digitally enhanced pieces.

The visual art components legacy remains. Each year, the artwork reflects something meaningful to Windermere. From wading birds and sunsets to local flora and fauna, the chosen themes highlight the beauty of the natural surroundings. For participants, the race provides a chance to experience the unique beauty Windermere is graced with. The 5K and 10K courses take runners along the scenic lakes and through tree-lined sand streets, offering a chance to enjoy Windermere's natural beauty up close.

The Force Behind the Race

The success of the Windermere Run Among the Lakes—and many other town events—can be attributed to the town's dedicated all-volunteer Parks & Recreation Committee. This group of passionate residents oversees and maintains Windermere’s parks, beaches, and recreational trails, ensuring these spaces are accessible and welcoming for the community. The 2024 committee is led by Chair Dena O’Malley and Vice Chair Sue Ann Reichard, who have an incredible heart for service and the Windermere Community. Their leadership, enthusiasm, and unwavering dedication to fostering community spirit have been instrumental in maintaining the legacy and vision of the Run Among the Lakes founder, Donna Steele.

The Parks & Recreation Committee’s activities, and events, include the annual 5K/10K Run Among the Lakes, Pet Fest, and the Halloween Hayride & Costume Parade. Their efforts provide opportunities for citizens of all ages to enjoy the outdoors, stay active, and connect with their neighbors.

A Race for Everyone

One of the most remarkable aspects of the Windermere Run Among the Lakes is its inclusivity. The race draws runners of all ages and levels. From young children to seniors in their 80s, everyone is welcome. "We’ve had seven-year-olds and 87-year-olds running," Sue Ann Reichard proudly shared. "It’s amazing to see such a wide range of participants. The 5K tends to attract more recreational runners, while the 10K is for the more competitive crowd, but there’s a place for everyone here."

Even the race’s starting bib, a tradition dating back to the event's founder, is steeped in local history. Donna Steele, who started the race, is always given the bib number one—a nod to her enduring impact on the event.

The race’s fast-growing popularity is evident in its numbers. Last year, the event sold out with 1,200 participants, and the organizers are already preparing for another strong turnout this year. Despite the high demand, the event remains tightly woven into the community, offering both participants and spectators a chance to explore the charm of downtown Windermere.

More Than Just a Race

Known for its scenic routes and local art, its impact extends far beyond the race itself. All proceeds from the event go directly to Windermere’s parks and recreation initiatives. Over the years, the funds have been used for playground renovations, shade structures, and other enhancements that benefit Windermere.

Dena O’Malley explains, "Our committee is entirely volunteer-based. Every single dollar raised goes back into our parks. This commitment to the town is part of what makes the race so special—it’s truly a labor of love for our volunteers.”

This year, in honor of the town's upcoming centennial, the race committee has also spearheaded a legacy project: the Centennial Walkway. This project, set to transform a popular walking path in Central Park, will create a multi-generational space for residents and visitors to enjoy for years to come. The path, which has fallen into disrepair, will be rebuilt with a soft, durable material and will be adorned with centennial-themed logos and markers.

Additionally, the committee is rolling out a park bench adoption program, allowing families to contribute to the beautification of the town’s green spaces. Each month, a new bench will be unveiled, offering a lasting tribute to the community’s ongoing efforts to improve and preserve Windermere’s parks.

Looking Ahead

As Windermere approaches its 100th anniversary, the Run Among the Lakes continues to play a central role in the town’s celebration of community and heritage. With a dedicated team of volunteers and the support of local businesses, like the Windermere Brewery, Palomas’ and Dean Allen Custom Homes, the race shows no signs of slowing down.

With its unique blend of art, nature, and fitness, the Windermere Run Among the Lakes is much more than a race—it’s a celebration of everything that makes this small town special.

Whether you’re a seasoned runner, a family with strollers, or a nature lover, Windermere Run Among the Lakes offers something for everyone. Sue Ann Reichard says, "It’s a fun morning, a community-focused morning, and we’re so lucky to have a team that makes it all happen."
