Seeds of Leadership: Self-Awareness

From the Desk of Chief Ogden | By Chief David A. Ogden

Some people are offended by everything… yet ashamed of nothing.

Windermere Police Chief David A. Ogden

Years ago, I worked with someone who proudly said, “I just tell it like it is.” He knew people found him offputting, but wore that as a badge of honor. He was quick to point out the faults and failures of others while remaining blind to his own.

Ironically, he later became caught in a personal scandal that nearly destroyed his reputation. The same harsh standards he used to judge others became impossible for him to live up to himself.

These situations are difficult to watch—but even harder when we recognize traces of that same tendency in our own lives.

We live in a culture where reaction is instant, offense is celebrated, and introspection is rare.

An ancient wisdom book reminds us that truth has a way of exposing the thoughts and intentions of the heart. Real leadership requires that kind of self-examination.

Before correcting others, we should first examine ourselves.

Humility grows where self-awareness takes root.

Plant seeds. Grow leaders. Keep inspiring.

Regards,
David A. Ogden
