Ten Questions for Making Wise Decisions

As a Chief and former High-Risk Incident Commander and SWAT Team Leader, I’ve often been asked how I evaluate decisions—especially under pressure. My response is simple:

“Is someone going to die right now if I don’t make this decision?”

If the answer is no, I don’t have an emergency—I have a puzzle to solve. That perspective allows time for reflection and discernment rather than reaction. Over time, I’ve found these ten questions help guide sound decision-making in leadership and life.

10 Questions to Ask Before Making a Wise Decision

  • Do I have all the facts?

  • Am I making this decision with a clear and grounded mindset?

  • Is time pressure pushing me into a premature decision?

  • What motives might be driving this decision?

  • How should my past experiences inform this decision?

  • Have I sought wise and objective counsel?

  • Am I ignoring any warning signs?

  • Have I considered all possible outcomes?

  • Could this decision compromise my integrity or reputation?

  • Is there a better option that creates a greater impact?

Leadership is not about making decisions faster—it’s about making them wiser. Slowing down to ask the right questions often reveals the clarity you need to move forward with confidence and integrity.

Wisdom grows in the pause between impulse and action.
