The Windermere Police Foundation and Windermere Wine and Dine joined forces once again to bring comfort and dignity to children in need. This year, their annual "Sleep in Heavenly Peace" bunk bed build gathered 125 dedicated volunteers who worked tirelessly to build 61 bunk beds, ensuring that children across the region have a safe, comfortable place to sleep.
Chief Ogden’s Vision of Service
Leading the charge in this community-focused initiative is Windermere Police Chief David Ogden. For years, Chief Ogden has prioritized using his position as a platform for social good, rallying community members to participate in various charitable events. His unwavering commitment to the "Sleep in Heavenly Peace" project exemplifies his philosophy that policing goes beyond law enforcement; it also involves fostering a compassionate, proactive role in the community. Under his guidance, the Windermere Police Department has built a strong reputation for civic engagement and philanthropy.
Chief Ogden’s leadership style is as hands-on as it is inspirational. On the bunk bed build day, he joined the volunteers, working side by side with them to sand, assemble, and finish each bed frame. His presence and encouragement helped set the tone for the event, creating an atmosphere of teamwork and shared purpose. "This isn’t just about building beds; it’s about building a better future for our kids," he said. "When children have a place to sleep, it gives them security and stability, which every child deserves."
A Community Brought Together by a Common Goal
The success of this year’s event is a testament to the Windermere community’s generosity and willingness to work together for a meaningful cause. Residents, business owners, and even families joined in to lend a hand. The 125 volunteers ranged in age and background but shared a common goal: to make a difference in the lives of children. Some volunteers were seasoned carpenters, while others were learning as they went, but they all contributed to the effort under the guidance of experienced leaders.
Throughout the day, volunteers engaged in different stages of the building process—from sanding and staining wood to assembling and stacking bunk beds. The atmosphere was lively and focused, with everyone recognizing the significance of their contribution.

Their collaboration with the Windermere Police Department has amplified the impact of the bunk bed build, drawing attention and resources to help make the event a success year after year.
Celebrating the 5th Annual Event
As we mark the 5th annual "Sleep in Heavenly Peace" event, Police Chief Dave Ogden expressed heartfelt gratitude: "We couldn’t have done it without the amazing efforts of the Sea Cadets, our dedicated Windermere Officers and their families, and the many volunteers who showed up to make a difference. A special thanks to Ellie Lou’s Restaurant for generously supporting our event each year with their amazing BBQ—your kindness means so much! And Windermere Wine & Dine, thank you for sponsoring our projects."
The Importance of “Sleep in Heavenly Peace”
"Sleep in Heavenly Peace" is a national nonprofit with a simple yet profound mission: to provide beds to children who do not have one. Lack of proper bedding can impact a child’s well-being, affecting everything from school performance to overall health. The organization strives to improve the quality of life for families in need by giving children a comfortable, safe place to sleep.
For the Windermere Police Foundation and the Windermere community, partnering with "Sleep in Heavenly Peace" has become a cherished annual tradition. Each bed they build is more than just a piece of furniture; it symbolizes hope and a reminder that a community is strongest when it cares for its most vulnerable members.
Reflections on a Successful Event
The 2024 bunk bed build was an overwhelming success. As Chief Ogden remarked at the end of the day, “When we work together, we can change lives.” And this year, as in years past, the Windermere community has proven that it is more than ready to make that change happen.
The success of this year’s "Sleep in Heavenly Peace" bunk bed build is not just a win for the children receiving beds—it’s a victory for the entire Windermere community, showing what can be achieved when people come together for a common cause.
