The God Who Came Near: Why Jesus Matters

Community Submission | By Tim Leffler

So far, we’ve seen a God who does not give up and does not walk away. But how does a holy God actually come near to broken people?

The answer is Jesus. The Bible says God did not send a philosophy, a system, or a set of rules. He came Himself.

“And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us.” John 1:14

Jesus was not merely a wise teacher or moral example. He is God in human form; God stepping into the world He created.

He entered our world:

  • Not in comfort, but in poverty

  • Not in power, but in humility

  • Not into applause, but into rejection

He came close enough to touch, to listen, to sit with people, and to weep with them. Close enough to experience what it means to be human. Why would God do that?

Because love moves toward the one it loves.

“For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son…” John 3:16

Jesus came for people who could not fix themselves:

  • the tired

  • the guilty

  • the confused

  • the anxious

  • the searching,

  • the ashamed,

  • and those who felt too far gone.

“The Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.” Luke 19:10

Jesus did not come to condemn us, shame us, or demand performance. He came to restore what was broken and bring us back to God.

The same God who created us…

The same God we walked away from…

Is the God who came looking for us.

And if you have ever wondered:

  • Does God actually see me?

  • Does He care about my life?

  • Am I too far gone?

Look at Jesus. He is God within reach.

Closer than you think.
Closer than your past.
Closer than your fears.
Closer than your regrets.

But coming near was only the beginning. Closeness alone cannot heal what sin has broken. Love would have to do more.

Next month, the story moves toward the cross.
