Most people throw away their used sneakers every 125-200 days without ever thinking about recycling. Since sneakers are manufactured with materials that are not biodegradable, they remain in landfills or are incinerated, which leads to toxic chemicals in our air and soil.

The process of manufacturing sneakers produces large amounts of CO2 which contributes to the serious effects of climate change and global warming. Recycling and reusing sneakers keeps sneakers out of landfills, reduces the need for manufacturing new shoes and sneakers, and supports a growing circular economy.

The Problem

In the United States, at least 200 million pairs of shoes and sneakers end up in landfills each year.
Shoes in landfills can take 30 to 40 years to decompose.
Harmful chemicals are emitted into the soil and air which pollutes our surroundings.
More than 600 million people worldwide don't even own a pair of shoes.

Why Is Recycling Tennis Shoes Helping Rescue Rabbits?

Orlando Rabbit Care and Adoptions (ORCA) is excited to launch an Athletic Shoe Drive Fundraiser to support the rescue rabbits currently in our care. We’re collecting gently worn and used athletic shoes, and ORCA will earn funds based on the total number of sneakers donated. Not only does your donation directly benefit local rescue rabbits—it also helps the planet by keeping shoes out of landfills. It’s a simple and meaningful way to make a big impact.

ORCA is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the health, care, and enjoyment of house rabbits as family members. 100% of the money we raise goes directly back to our rescued rabbits. We’re proud to be a foster-based organization, operating without the expense of a physical shelter. ORCA relies on dedicated volunteers to care for our rabbits, raise awareness about the needs of domestic rabbits, and support our fundraising efforts.
