The town of Windermere ignited its centennial celebrations in a way befitting a community with a rich history and a bright future. Flames leapt to life in front of the historic Town Hall as the town officially unveiled its Centennial Torches, a permanent symbol of 100 years of unity, progress, and small-town charm.
A Night of Legacy and Light
Windermere Mayor Jim O’Brien hosted the evening and welcomed a distinguished crowd of local and state officials, community leaders, and longtime residents, all gathered to witness this milestone.
The ceremony’s defining moment arrived as John Palmer Luff Jr., great-grandson of town founder John Calvin Palmer, joined Mayor O’Brien in lighting the flames—linking generations of the town’s legacy together in this historic moment.
Standing tall outside Town Hall, these gas-lit torches will burn year-round, a timeless tribute to the resilience, spirit, and heritage of Windermere.
Town Manager Robert Smith and District 1 County Commissioner Nicole Wilson also served as keynote speakers. Florida District 45 State Representative Leonard Spencer presented a proclamation from the Florida House of Representatives, cementing Windermere’s place in the state’s history.
Orange County Mayor Jerry Demings took the celebration a step further, officially declaring January 24, 2025, as "Town of Windermere Day," ensuring that the town’s centennial would be recognized far beyond its borders.
More Than Just a Celebration
Centennial Committee Chair CT Allen reflecting on the significance of the centennial, shared, “We wanted this centennial to be more than just a party—we wanted to inspire a lasting appreciation for Windermere’s history while setting the stage for the next hundred years.”
And this is just the beginning. Throughout the year, the town will host events and initiatives designed to honor Windermere’s past, celebrate its present, and pave the way for its future.
The Centennial Torches are a reminder of what truly makes Windermere special: its people, its traditions, and an unwavering commitment to preserving the essence of this beloved town.
