Library Corner | By Steve Powell, Library Director/CEO, Orange County Library System
September is Library Card Sign-up Month and Orange County Library System wants every resident in Orange County to have a library card. Signing up for a card is quick and easy online or in-person at a branch and access is instant. And if you already have a card, I hope you will encourage a friend to get theirs. A library card unlocks a vast array of activities and resources for all ages. Learn something new like macrame, how to cook mofongo or American Sign Language. Stream movies, TV and music ad-free. Study and take practice tests for college entrance or professional exams. Check out e-books and audiobooks or have the books come to you with Home Delivery. Best of all, it's all free with your library card. Stop into your nearest branch or visit ocls.org to find something new just for you.
We have some big events this month. Aspiring authors can connect with Orlando-area literary organizations at this year’s Orlando Literary Expo at Alafaya Branch on Sunday, September 13, at 2 p.m. Learn about resources available to local writers, and how you can get more involved in our literary community. Find out more at ocls.org/orlando-literary-expo/.
Come meet fellow film enthusiasts and view finalist films for this year’s Melrose Film Festival at Orlando Public Library on Saturday, September 26, from 12:30-5 p.m. Celebrate the art of visual storytelling in short films, highlighting the work of imaginative filmmakers across the globe.
Looking for even more unique value from your library card? Check out Local Wanderer, OCLS’ award-winning culture pass program, which provides cardholders free, first come, first served admission to some of the best local arts, science and culture venues across Orange County.
