Veterans Day is a time to honor the men and women who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces, both past and present. It provides the nation with an opportunity to express gratitude and recognize the vital role veterans play in safeguarding our peace and preserving our freedom.
Vernon Riker: A Legacy of Service
Vernon Riker, a longtime Windermere resident alongside his wife, Boots (Mary Emily), served honorably in the Navy during the Korean War. Today, that legacy of service continues through his grandson, Phillip who grew up in Windermere. Three years ago, Phillip followed in his grandfather’s footsteps, joining the Navy’s Aviation Ordnance Division. His role involves loading rockets, missiles, and guns on aircraft. Shortly before his deployment, Phillip married Haleigh, marking the beginning of their life as a military family. The Rikers' contributions exemplify the enduring spirit of service that defines both Windermere and the nation.
Vernon reflected on their service: “I’m proud of what we’ve contributed, both in the Navy and at home. Seeing Phillip choose to serve and carry on that legacy fills me with immense pride. It’s about more than us; it’s about serving something greater than yourself.”
Join the Windermere Rotary Club on Sunday, November 10th at noon at the Town Hall to honor Veterans Day and veterans like Vernon and servicemen like Phillip. The guest speaker for the event is Veteran and Council Member Tony Davit, the Girl Scouts, Citrus Singers will also be performing a special tribute.
Veterans Day is a powerful reminder of the deep gratitude we owe to those who serve and protect the freedoms we cherish.
