Successful Leadership vs. Significant Leadership
I wrote my aspiration to lead an agency a decade before my appointment, believing I had a solid understanding of what success entailed. However, I soon realized I needed to redefine my perspective. Success, I learned, isn't about the awards, accolades, or credits earned. True success lies in the relationships fostered and the trust built within our team and the community we serve—those are the treasures I hold most dear.
The distinction between success and significance is profound. Success often revolves around personal achievements, such as career milestones, financial gains, or individual pursuits. In contrast, significance transcends personal accomplishments and centers on the positive impact made on others. It’s found in the relationships we cultivate, the kindness we extend, and the lasting difference we make in the world. While success may bring personal satisfaction, significance leaves a legacy rooted in selfless service.
For me, significance brings peace, fulfillment, and gratitude—often accompanied by a smile that words can’t fully capture.
