Community Spotlight | By Barbara Frazier
For the past decade, FMI STEM Academy has helped students and families in Southwest Orlando overcome academic barriers and build clear pathways to college and careers.
Founded by Justus and Barbara Frazier, FMI was created to address a persistent problem: many capable students are limited by math gaps, narrow exposure to career options, and a lack of early planning.
Justus Frazier, a former college mathematics professor with more than 30 years of experience, saw how traditional instruction could hold students back. In response, he developed the Sensei Learning System, a hands-on approach centered on learning by doing. This system became the foundation of FMI STEM Academy, a 6th–12th-grade school serving students across Southwest Orlando.
The results are striking. Students often complete one to two grade levels of math in a single year, allowing many to begin college coursework well ahead of schedule. Some start dual enrollment as early as 9th grade, building confidence while reducing the cost and time of higher education. In addition to academics, students receive structured college and career planning, with exposure to certifications and high-demand fields such as cybersecurity, aviation, health science, engineering, and entrepreneurship.
Barbara Frazier, Executive Director of the FMI STEM Foundation and CEO of College Options USA, broadens the academy’s community impact. She provides career counseling, builds partnerships with colleges and employers, and equips parents with practical tools to guide educational decisions. As the author of You Want to Major in What? and Is the Tassel Worth the Hassle?, she promotes affordable, flexible pathways to high-skill careers, including options outside the traditional four-year degree.
The Fraziers are equally committed to underserved and nontraditional learners. FMI supports the West Orange Dream Center in helping students earn their GED and reconnect with education and workforce training. The organization also assists disadvantaged youth through CareerSource Central Florida programs and tailored earn-and-learn summer pathways that combine skill development with real-world experience.
