Reviving that “Day One Feeling” in Mundane Moments
Wishful Scrolling
Baby picture, selfie at the gym, food, another French bulldog pic…
Jill got married? Ha, I remember my “honeymoon phase” of marriage…
Bob seems happy at his new job. Too happy. Give it six months…
Oh barf, another “We’re homeowners!” sign at the closing…
That monthly mortgage bomb to my bank account is just the best!
A wedding day, new job, or new home are among the weightiest moments of our lives; they become the new chapters we look back on and by which we understand our own stories. Day one of marriage is the honeymoon; day one of work is optimistic and exciting; day one of homeownership is empowering and restful, as the sometimes stressful process of buying or selling a home is complete.
These “new normals” in life, however, inevitably become tiresome and mundane. Now, your marriage is bewildering, as your spouse appears to be a different person entirely all these years later. Now, your work is infuriating, as all of the promises made during the interview seem to have been forgotten. Now, your house is overwhelming, as closing day was too excited to remind you of that $3,500 “gift” the bank asks for every month. Day one seems like a lifetime ago, and what started as romantic may have been replaced with cynicism or a pessimistic attitude.
Think about your own life. How much do you long for “Day One,” those days of bliss, where things were fresh, uncertain, and exciting? Like a child’s first visit to Disney, or that feeling the first time someone took your hand in theirs. Pure elation! Without surprise, that “first time feeling” is what advertisers on social media sell to you most. So, it makes sense that our minds are adrift at sea most of the day, longing for what is new, what is fresh, and what is next.
Reality Check
The inevitable humdrum of life, however, can be revived with proper perspective and self-sacrifice. We are not stuck between being overly romantic or pessimistic about life if our contentment is found in the present moment. The moment our eyes lift from what is missing in our lives to what we can give to someone else's is the moment we have longed for, in which purpose and peace abound.
Life is not a “honeymoon,” but the rich complexities of growth are refined as by fire, that you might look back on a lifetime of meaningful love, contribution, and legacy-building. The path less-travelled, the life we want, is taken by thousands of little steps, not colossal leaps.
The Secret Sauce
“So, what’s the secret sauce? What’s your story?” You hear this question at a 50th anniversary party. But the answer seems anything but helpful. The couple responds by saying that they met, got married, had kids, and “stuck it out” for the long haul.
You can’t be serious. That’s it? You just stuck it out? You actually do the same thing as this couple. You look back in life and think in “chapter titles,” not page contents. In reality, each chapter of your life is full of detailed complications, excitements, and elaborate decision-making. But we usually forget the details. If your present moment is difficult or dull, remember how previous “storms” gave way to peace through intentional effort:
- A heartfelt “I was truly wrong, please forgive me” gave way to healing, passion, and renewed service for one another.
- Clear communication at work gave way to opportunity, eliminating bitterness and inviting renewed teamwork and progress.
- Long-term financial planning gave way to rest, as anxiety cannot live alongside preparation.
Building Your Life
Your best way forward in your next small step ahead. The Real Estate Collection helps you reach the light at the end of the tunnel on closing day, but that light is not the destination. Closing day is a bright opportunity by which we see more clearly how we might use our time, energy, money, and homes to continually serve those we live with, those we spend 40 hours per week with, and those who will enjoy the legacy we leave through intentional wealth-building. With this perspective, mundane moments become magnificent and rewarding.
Your story is written daily. Your next date with a spouse, day at work, and monthly payment towards your house are wildly significant. Think in this way so you too can share the “secret sauce” with a new generation: “We took little steps together, not leaps, one day at a time.”
