In the fall of 2023, a group from Family Church embarked on a journey to the heart of Burundi, Africa. Among them were Dr. Charles Cooper, and Pastor Troy Schmidt, who ventured far from the comfort of their homes to preach, teach, and witness firsthand the challenges faced by local communities.

This was not the group’s first mission trip to Burundi, a land-locked and densely populated country in East Africa. Burundi is one of the poorest countries in the world with more than 70 percent of the population living in poverty. Pastor Schmidt says, “This was my fourth trip to Burundi and every time I get more out of the experience than the previous time. Burundians have a will to live and thrive despite their circumstances. They inspire me more than I inspire them."

On the trip, the group visited a sanctuary for 150 special needs deaf children. In a land where being born with a handicap is often misconstrued as a curse, these children find themselves forsaken. But within the walls of this institution, they discover a home and a hope for a brighter future. The school, which was graciously gifted the land, has managed to erect two buildings that serve as residential and educational facilities, complete with electricity. A well was drilled to meet the water needs of the residents, reaching a depth of 10 meters. However, it was soon discovered that while the water was suitable for various uses, it fell short of being potable.

Pastor Troy Schmidt reflects, "Seeing the faith and the perseverance of the young ones at the Deaf School was inspiring. They lived with joy even without clean water. It spoke to me about my priorities and certainly made me appreciative for the simple things of life such as water from a tap."

Recognizing the urgency of the situation, the Family Church's Month of Missions offering includes the Burundi Water Project. The goal is clear and compelling: raise $20,000 to deepen the well to 30 meters, ensuring access to clean drinking water, and install solar energy pumps and generators. The commitment of the Family Church and its community to this cause reflects a profound understanding of the gospel's call to serve the least among us. By providing these children with access to clean water, a basic human right, they are also giving them the gift of health, education, and the opportunity to break free from the cycle of poverty and superstition.

Dr. Charles Cooper explains, "The children of the Deaf Home and School are being equipped with employable skills that will allow them to graduate as productive members of society.” Through the generosity of donors and the unwavering spirit of volunteers, the Burundi Water Project stands as a beacon of hope, demonstrating what can be achieved when faith, love, and action come together.

As the Family Church continues to support and uplift the lives of those in Burundi, they invite each of us to reflect on the impact of collective effort. It is a poignant reminder that when we come together for a cause greater than ourselves, we can transform lives and foster a world where every child, regardless of their abilities or circumstances, can dream of a brighter tomorrow.
