Community Event | By Jocklyn Mundy
On Saturday, October 10th, the Windermere Parks and Recreation Committee presents the 25th Annual Town of Windermere Run Among the Lakes. Neighbors of Windermere is honored to come alongside as an Associate Sponsor. Partnering with the Parks and Recreation team on a tradition woven into the fabric of our community is always a privilege and a joy.
Where It Started: The run began in the fall of 2001, in the weeks after September 11th. It was never about times or trophies. It started as a way for neighbors to stand together when that mattered most. Twenty-five years later, that purpose still holds. The race has grown, but its heart has stayed the same.
The Morning Itself: It is, by any measure, one of the most beautiful courses in Central Florida. Runners and walkers set out from Town Hall on Main Street and wind beneath the canopy of century-old oaks, past Lake Butler, Lake Down, and Lake Bessie, along the dirt roads that make this town unmistakably itself. The 10K steps off first, for those who want the longer road. Then the 5K follows, open to runners and walkers alike. And the youngest neighbors get a morning of their own, with a free Kids Run for ages seven and under. Every runner crosses the line to a custom shirt and a finisher medal, and this year that medal carries something special, a commemorative design marking a quarter century of the race, sponsored by the Simon Simaan Real Estate Group.
At Neighbors of Windermere, we know the best stories are the ones that bring a community together. The Run Among the Lakes does exactly that. It gathers residents, families, runners, walkers, and the folks who simply come to cheer, and it reminds us what a town can be when it shows up. Every entry gives back, too, because the event benefits the Town of Windermere Parks and Recreation, the very spaces that make this community feel like home. Registration is capped at 1,200 and tends to fill fast, so sign up early at windermererun.com. Twenty-five years strong. We hope to see you among the lakes.
